SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING IN PRIELBRUSYE

KavkazSkiTur Ltd suggests the breathtaking winter holiday in Prielbrusye. It's up-to-date International Centre of Tourism, Mountaineering and Skiing in the South of Russia. Situating in the very heart of Baksan valley, Prielbrusye (Elbrus region) is one of the largest holiday center in southern Russia. Spectacular mountain view, National wildlife park protect flora and fauna, permitting nature to provide a never-ending display of magnificent color and movement. Prielbrusye becomes better equipped with every year. The sports complex on the slopes of Mount Cheget, a rocky spur between Elbrus and Donguz-Orun, and Mount Elbrus is growing, with cableways, hotels, cafes and shops. Altogether, over 23,000 guests stay every year in the tourist centers of Prielbrusye, while the cableways can carry almost a million people annually. Cableways function the whole year round. Avalanches are a constant threat in the mountains. A special avalanche service was set up to investigate and forecast avalanches. In designing mountain sport complexes prime consideration is given to the danger of avalanches. The suitability of the region for building and the accessibility of skiing tracks. There are great number of hotels and tourist camps. Today the tourist's complex Prielbrusye consists of 30 enterprises, including 5 tourist hotels 6 tourist bases, 5 boarding houses, 4 tourist centers/camps, with total capacity about 3000 persons. In addition, from 2002 year in Elbrus region are opening annually private hotels, capacity from 20 to 80 persons each. The length of cable-way's complex is more then 12 km. This perfectly equipped system provides the safe elevation on high slopes and the snow covering peaks of Cheget and Elbrus. The whole length of ski-tracks is more than 35 km. The longest one is Stary Krugozor"-"Azau" - 2500 m. Swing cable way "Elbrus" 1st line - from the station "Azau" to the station "Stary Krugozor". Change of altitude is 650 m. The length of a ski track is 2500 m. 2nd line - from the station "Stary Krugozor" to the station "Mir". Change of altitude is 500 m. The length of a ski track is 2000 m. 3rd line - from the station "Mir" to the station "Gara Bashi". Change of altitude is 250 m. The length of a ski track is 2000 m. Arm-chaired cable way "Cheget" 1st line - two cable ways to the station "I" ("Moon" from Balkarian). Change of altitude is 650 m. The length of worldwide ski track is 1600 m. 2nd line - Change of altitude is 490 m. The length of a ski track is 1300 m. There is a cafe "I" at the second station of "Cheget" cable way. From the cafe opens a magnificent view to mount Elbrus The team of "I" waits for guests with Home fire-place and traditional "Gleentwein" (hot wine). All ski tracks have a marking and serviced by snow tractors - special high mountain catterpillar tractor. Its possible skiing to high slopes of Elbrus with elevating by the snow-tractor. Ski tracks of Cheget and Elbrus are suited for professionals and beginners tastes. There are a lot of snow-falls in Prielbrusye. It provides snow covering tracks for all the ski season. There are cafes, bars in the station rooms. Choose from a number of comfortable restaurants and kebab-houses serving a wide variety of Caucasian and international food. The resorts are equipped with telephones, fax and E-mail. There are guarded parking lots right at the foot of mountains. Rental agencies of skis and snowboards are situated in Prielbrusye in large quantities. There are never froze natural sources of sparkling mineral water called Narzan. This miracle moisture gives strength and health after the skiing!!

DESTINATION TO PRIELBRUSYE

The road to Prielbrusye begins from the nearest airports - Mineralnye Vody or Nalchik. The nearest railway stations - Nalchik, Pyatigorsk, Prohladny, Mineralnye Vody. Mineralnye Vody airport has direct flights with cities: Munich, Istanbul, Saloniki, Pafos, Tel-Aviv, Shardga etc. For your convenience its also possible flights to airport Krasnodar from Frankfurt and Vienna. If the air flight is via Moscow we can provide air tickets Moscow - Mineralnye Vody - Moscow. From Moscow airports there are everyday five flights to Mineralnye Vody, one flight to Nalchik. Its possible to choose the convenient time, to join with international flight. Transfer from Nalchik to Prielbrusye takes about 1,5 hour, from Mineralnye Vody about 3,5 hour.

Climate

From the moist air masses coming from the Black Sea, the accumulated water vapor is almost completely discharged in the form of rain on the slopes of Main and Lateral ridges. At an altitude of 3000 m. the maximum amount of precipitation falls (~ 270 mm), higher their volume decreases.  

According to long-term observations, in October observed the first snowfall, but permanent snow cover is established only in November - December. The distribution of snow cover depends on the form of relief. As a result of force wind and snow avalanches the snow cover in the folds of the surface can reach high values.

At altitudes of 3000 meters the snow may fall in positive and negative air temperatures. The temperature of soil surface can also be both negative and positive.

     Vertical gradient of temperature in the winter months is very different depending on the form of relief. The lowest temperature recorded in the deep valleys and hollows. The high-altitude zone is characterized by a large winter dryness, lack of low clouds, plenty of sun. Rarely seen ice-frost phenomenon.

The average temperature in July +10 degrees at an altitude of 2500 m and -1.4 degrees at an altitude of 4200 m. In winter the average temperature in January, accordingly -12 and -19 degrees, the absolute minimum is -30 and -40 degrees.     

During the year, at all altitudes is dominated by westerly winds. In the valleys of the typical mountain-valley winds. Since the Baksan valley stretches in the latitudinal direction, resulting in her mountain-valley winds and the winds of the upper atmospheric layers are mutually complementary. In Terskol and Azau usually storm winds do not exist. During climb the wind increases. At altitudes above 4000 m (the height of the rocks in the area of the place "Priut-11") are observed storm winds (15 m/s) and hurricane force, in February, at a temperature of -40 degrees, winds reach forces up to 40 m/s and above.
