Chegem is a strong, capricious, powerful, noisy mountain river forming narrow canyon Chegem. On a hot summer day, it is especially pleasant to walk near it. The air is saturated with moisture, you want to breathe deeply. Incredibly beautiful and diverse waterfalls — jets of water flow from the very rocks, from the very top, as if from the very bowels of the earth. The gorge captivates tourists at first sight! Just imagine — on one side there is a steep rock, on the other a stormy river, and streams of water break out of the rocks! And with what power! They create a wall of water. Chegem waterfalls are also called Weeping waterfalls. It really does look like the rocks are crying. In winter, the waterfalls turn into a magical and delightful sight! They freeze and form ice pillars, statues and icicles. This is something incredible! It’s like time has stopped here. Everything here is special — the majesty of the mountains, the power of the river, the beauty of waterfalls, the sound of water, clean air, the greenery of the forest and serene tranquility.
On this tour, we suggest walking along the Chegem Gorge, admiring the Big and Small Chegem waterfalls, having lunch in a cafe and trying the local cuisine. Half a day is allotted for the excursion, then we return to Nalchik.
Chegem waterfalls
The first stop of our tour is at the Big Chegem waterfalls. Directly from the steep rocks, a raging and noisy stream breaks down jets of water at high speed, forming a cascade. Some shoot out of cracks in the rock, arching in the air, falling down. Others flow in a wide stream from large holes in the rock. Falling from a great height, they break into many tiny splashes, and the sun’s rays form small rainbows in them. In winter, the waterfall freezes and is simply an incredible sight! These are ice pillars, of enormous height, resembling giant candles! Some of them hang over the river with an openwork ice fringe. It’s just amazing! Some kind of natural monument.
Chegem waterfalls are beautiful all year round. They always have their own, unique beauty and zest. The gorge has a special microclimate, due to the increased humidity from the waterfalls and river flowing in narrow canyon. Outlandish plants grow on the slopes of the mountains, and the singing of birds only complements the previously unseen mountain landscape.
The Chegem canyon is a sight of rare beauty. The waterfalls illuminated by the sun form a bright rainbow, and the gloomy-looking gorge comes to life. In winter, ice pillars and columns of frozen jets and streams of water, resembling giant twisted candles, or stalactites, descend to the river itself. The rocky walls of the gorge are a section of the rock mass that makes up the ridge. The bottom of the gorge is located at an altitude of 1000-1200 meters above sea level, and the height of the ridge exceeds 3000 meters.
Free time
Here we have free time, you can take a walk, climb to a ridge, hike to higher areas and take memorable photos, buy souvenirs and have lunch.
Then we will go to admire the Small Chegem waterfalls.
Small waterfalls
The place is very beautiful! Yes, there is something not just beautiful — bewitching. A huge column of water falling from a stone well. The rumble from the waterfall is amplified by the echo of the rocks. Small sprays scatter around and irrigate the air. A rainbow plays in the drops of water. Emotions are just running high!
Here we will spend about 30 minutes, then we will drive back to Nalchik.
