The first part of the trip is described here — Jeep tour to Abay-Su waterfall
The Shaurtu glacier is located in the upper reaches of the Chegem Gorge and it is from it that the Chegem River originates. Shaurtu Glacier basis is centuries-old ice, which shimmers with different colors: blue, gray, purple, white, and so on. This is one of the oldest glaciers in the Caucasus.
On 4wheel car we leave Nalchik and we go to the Chegem canyon till camp site Chegem. Passports and permits are required at the border control outpost!
Further we go along the mountain road. On the way, stop at the Abay-Su waterfall. The beautiful and noisy Abay-Su waterfall seems to erupt from the depths of the rock, falling from a vertical wall. Flying 72 meters, it enters the lake. This is the highest waterfall in Kabardino-Balkaria that does not have cascades. It is not one powerful stream, but a large number of streams that either connect or break on rocky ledges. You can enjoy the beauty of falling water endlessly.
A good trail leads from the camp site to the Shaurtu glacier. We leave the camp site first along a dirt road leading through the forest, which will lead us to two parallel rivers — Tyuturgu and Shaurtu. There are bridges across the rivers. Immediately after the second bridge, the trail splits in two, we turn left and up into the Shaurtu gorge. The trail goes through the forest, in some places through dense thickets and steep but short rocky climbs. Soon the forest turns into a bush, and then the trail goes out into the open. There will always be a river on the left in the direction of travel. Yes, and the glacier will be visible ahead, surrounded by snow-covered mighty peaks. When approaching the glacier, the terrain will become a little more rugged, but not for long.
Before the glacier contemplation, lunch, and back.
